How do I avoid bed bugs at home?

In your home, keep clutter to a minimum and protect your mattress with an encasement, this will reduce potential hiding places for bed bugs.

Look for signs such as blood stains on sheets, dark spots (especially in secluded areas), live bed bugs, discarded exoskeletons (exuviae) from nymphs, and eggs.

Exercise caution when purchasing secondhand:

  • furniture
  • vintage fabrics or clothes
  • blankets
  • stuffed toys
  • rugs

Thoroughly inspect and clean them by vacuuming, freezing, or washing in hot water before bringing them into your home.

The first sign that you have encountered bed bugs at home is probably a bite mark.
