What do I do about bed bugs in hotels as a guest?

At arrival, leave your bag in the entrance and carefully check your room, especially the bed.

Look for dark stains, blood spots or live bed bugs and their remnants on the bed: along mattress seems, behind the headboard. No need to check the bed sheet, they have been replaced before you came in!

Remember to NOT place your luggage on the floor or under or on the bed. Use the baggage rack instead.

Notify the hotel staff if you find any evidence of bed bugs and request a different room, which you should inspect thoroughly!

And remember, depending on which country you are in, you could be entitled to compensation.

What type of accommodation is best to avoid bed bugs?

Wherever there are humans, there may be bed bugs, so the advice above applies no matter the kind of accommodation you have chosen for your stay: hotel, hostel, AirBnB homestay, vacation rental,…

Bed bugs are usually brought in accidentally by unaware guests, so most types of temporary accommodation where people constantly come and go are at high risk. The risk may be a lower if you choose a place that is rented out only once in a while.
